Hurricane Isaac, which hit parts of the Gulf Coast hard at the end of August, looked poised to drench the area with several inches of rain, as did Tropical Storm Lee, which dumped nearly 6 1/2 inches of rain on us early last September 2011. However, the remnants of Isaac tracked nearly due north, stalled to our west then dissipated before much of the moisture could get here. This was actually great news for the drought-stricken upper midwest. September ended up being tranquil and quite dry, except for the 18th, when a front brought regionwide heavy rains. 2.11" of rain fell here, accounting for 66% (about 2/3) of the month's total precipitation, which was still slightly below average. As in August, temperatures were modestly above normal, with slightly below normal max temperatures again more than offset by above normal mins. During the 1st week, the remnants of Isaac to our west drew in very warm, moist air. The result was a very warm 1st week, with highs ranging from 80 to 90 each day, and min temperatures averaging near 70. In terms of minimum temperatures, this was one of the warmest 1st weeks of September. Temperatures for the balance of the month were near to slightly below normal and followed the expected trend of cooling headed into the fall season. This was the 11th consecutive month with above normal temperatures - a remarkable streak!
