A downpour this afternoon at 3pm dropped .60" in 20 minutes. 2.02" of rain fell today setting a daily rainfall record. The heavy rains were attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Opal. Several tornadoes hit parts of MD and VA today. 6: Warm high 82 F. 14: Final in a string of six consecutive days in the 70s. Rain this morning, then a brief period of sunshine, then more rain this evening heavy at times .81" rain fell. 17: First frost and freeze of the season, low 30 F. 20: Became mostly cloudy. Heavy rain showers began late this afternoon. A strong thunderstorm at 7pm followed by steady moderate to heavy rains and gusty winds that lasted through the evening. 2.05" fell by midnight, the heaviest rain day of 1995 and also setting a daily rainfall record. 21: More rain overnight another .43" fell. 2.48" storm total rain in 12 hours. 27: Rain overnight .39" fell. Temperatures fell through the day. MONTHLY SUMMARY The drought that began in mid-August ended rather abruptly in October, with heavy rains on the 5th from Hurricane Opal, a devastating Cat. 4 storm that slammed into the Florida Panhandle. Nearly an inch fell from a cold front on the 14th, then another 2.48" of rain deluged the area on the 20th-21st in only 12 hours as another front plowed through. The final system passed through on the 27th-28th. Precipitation totaled 6.12", making this the 5th wettest October on record (since 1948). Meanwhile, temperatures were very mild until the final week. Mean temperatures were nearly 3 degrees above normal. 16 days were in the 70s or low 80s - very warm indeed. The season's first frost and freeze didn't occur until the morning of the 17th. Warm and wet would easily sum up October's weather. Additional notes/records 4: Record high min 64 F.
