High rebounded to 64 F today. 3: Mild high 77 F with dense AM fog. 9: Occasional rain showers .18" fell. Several hours of distant lightning from strong thunderstorms to our east late this evening. A very rare phenomenon this evening as a very large, bright meteorite rocketed across the sky. Still the size of a basketball, the ball of fire slammed into a brand new sports car in Hagerstown, unfortunately demolishing it! 11: A brief thunderstorm at 11am with one close crack of thunder. Some small hail was observed in nearby mountain locations. 15-16: Warm highs of 81 and 80. 19: Much colder high only 44 F with light showers of freezing rain, sleet and snow creating a light coating (0.1") on the ground. Daily record low max. 20: Cold low 23 F overnight. High of only 44 again. 24: Milder high 70 F with a brief afternoon thunderstorm. 30-31: Drizzle with occasional light rain. MONTHLY SUMMARY October was cool and very dry. Temperatures were below normal, with frozen precipitation recorded as early as the 19th. A number of moisture-starved fronts passed through, resulting in scant amounts of precipitation. In fact, this was the second driest October to date with only .67" precipitation. This was the driest October since the record .23" in 1963. The season's 1st frost and freeze was recorded on the first morning of the month. Additional notes/records 19: Record low max 44 F (tied again in 1996). 0.1" of snow/ice (record). October 1992 was the 2nd driest October to date with only 0.67" of precip.
