Flood watches in effect today. MONTHLY SUMMARY November began mild and dry, with only one notable precipitation event during the first half of the month. Nights were chilly early, but mild by mid-month. Six consecutive days from the 9th-14th were in the 60s. A strong cold front brought nearly an inch of rain on the 16th, followed by strong (locally damaging) winds on the 17th. Another warm, fair weather stretch followed, before the next system brought a cold rain to the area on the 24th-26th, most of it falling on the 25th. The heaviest rains fell north and west of here, where some areas had 2+ inches. Mountain areas also experienced their first winter weather episode. Freezing rain was observed in the higher elevations (such as Frostburg) of Allegany County. The coldest air of the season followed, along with the first snow flurries of the season on the 27th, the same date as last year's first snow flakes. The snow did not accumulate. The month finished on a milder and very wet note, with heavy rains on the final day pushing precipitation above normal for the month, and continuing the yo-yo pattern of above and below normal precipitation in 2010. Temperatures were the coolest with respect to normal since February, but still finished slightly above normal, marking the 9th consecutive above-normal temperature month, the longest streak since 13 consecutive above-normal temperature months from Oct 1990 - Oct 1991. Barring an extremely warm or cold December, 2010 looks to finish as the 4th warmest year behind 2006, 1990 & 1991, and bumping 1998 into 5th. See December for more details on the heavy rain event that dropped 2.73" of rain in about 30 hours from early on Nov. 30 to mid-day Dec. 1 and prompted flood warnings in the area. ADDITIONAL NOTES/RECORDS: 30: Daily record rainfall 1.42" shatters old record of 0.90" in 1967.
