Frequent lightning, gusty winds, very heavy downpours and pea-sized hail. 1.36" of rain fell. Reports of large hail, trees down, flash flooding throughout the county. 2.13" rain fell at the Police Barracks 1.5 miles SSW of this station within the hour. Lightning struck our church (the First Presbyterian) in Cumberland, damaging electrical equipment, and a few other houses and buildings were hit by lightning in the Cumberland area. Tim Thomas (Cumberland NWS observer) reported 1.15" of rain in only 10 minutes! 12: Warm high 86 F. Thunder to north but no rain. 13: Much cooler high 63 F with intermittent rain .38" fell. 22: Afternoon showers and thunderstorms, .50" fell. 24: Morning showers. 30: Very warm and humid high 89 F. Summary: Except for the severe storm on the 7th, May was a very quiet weather month. Temperatures were near-normal, with summer slowly creeping into the area late. There were not too many days of rainfall. Sunshine was relatively abundant. Additional notes/records 7th: A daily record 1.36" of rainfall. 2.13" fell at the Police Barracks in LaVale.
