Thunderstorms moved into the area around sunset with high winds and falling temperatures and rain changing to sleet. Sleet then changed to snow between 11pm and midnight 0.5" of snow/ice. 4: Heavy snow shortly after midnight another 3.0" of snow fell. Extremely windy with gusts estimated 60 to 70 mph causing white-out blizzard conditions and also a lot of wind damage in the area. 6: A fast-moving snow storm dropped a quick 4.0" of wet snow this afternoon. 8: Cold low 8 F. 9: Cold with steady moderate to heavy snow during the afternoon and evening 7.0" by midnight. 10: Light snow ended overnight another 1.5" fell for a storm snow total of 8.5". 13: Heavy wet snow fell all day, tapering off by late afternoon. 13" of snow piled up and melted down to 1.56" of precipitation. 21: Cold steady rain all day .68" fell. 31: Mild high 76 F. Summary: March definitely came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. The first half of the month brought a spectacular series of winter storms that dumped a combined 29 inches of snow. That made it the snowiest March on record, surpassing the 25.5" mark in 1993. It was a cold month with some blustery weather especially early. Precipitation was above normal. Additional notes/records 9th: Daily record snowfall of 7.0" fell 13th: Daily record precipitation (1.56") and snowfall (13.0") March 1999 was the SNOWIEST MARCH ON RECORD with a total snowfall of 29.0 inches. All of the snow fell in a 12-day stretch between the 3rd and 14th. A truly amazing winter blitz! March 1999 was also the 5th coldest March on record with mean temperature of 36.3 F.
