Miscellaneous Stats Mean Monthly Temperature: 69.7°F (+0.8°F) Year precipitation to date: 16.83" (-4.12") Monthly precipitation departure: -1.07" (normal June 3.60") Season snowfall to date: 16.5" (-24.0" = final total for 2011-2012 season) Number of days with: Fog 3 Thunder 4 Damaging Winds 1 NOTES/SIGNIFICANT EVENTS SEVERE START TO SUMMER - MANY NEARBY TORNADOES 1: Occasional showers and an intense line of thunderstorms with brief heavy rains and gusty winds early this evening. 12 tornadoes touched down in the state of MD - the most since July 27, 1994 when 14 tornadoes hit Maryland. One of the June 1, 2012 twisters, an EF-1, touched down in eastern Allegany Co. near Bellegrove, near Green Ridge State Forest. The twister had 90 mph winds and a path width of 175 yards. This was the 3rd confirmed tornado to hit the Green Ridge area in the past 2 years. Early on April 28, 2011, two EF-0 tornadoes hit the very same area of Allegany Co. It was the 5th Allegany Co. tornado in the past 4 years, as an EF-1 tornado hit Oldtown on July 29th, 2009, and the same storm produced another tornado near Flintstone. This makes at least 8 tornadoes in the county since 1998, when adding the 3 twisters that touched down on June 2, 1998, including the violent F4 Frostburg Tornado. Tornadoes also hit the town of Ligonier, PA, just west of my current location in Johnstown, and Bedford Co., PA just NE of the local area. 1-7: Cool start to June with highs in the 60s or 70s each day and lows in the low-mid 50s each day. 8-12: Warmer with overnight rain showers and t-storms on the 12th. 13-18: Cooler with pleasant temperatures, low humidity & fair weather. 0.55" of rainfall 18th-19th. 19-22: Becoming hot & humid with a brief thunderstorm on the evening of the 22nd. 23-27: Near-normal late June temperatures with modest humidity and fair weather each day. 28: Very hot high 96 F, just misses tying 1969's record 97. Humid with heat indeces well over 100. EXTREME HEAT - VIOLENT THUNDERSTORM DERECHO 29: EXTREMELY HOT high 101 F is 1 degree shy of the all-time June record 102 on June 2, 1951. AM low was 81! Humid with heat indeces over 110. TREMENDOUS line of thunderstorms ripped through the area right around sunset (9pm) producing a derecho with widespread winds of 50 to 70 mph and over 75 - hurricane force - in some places. Severe tree and power line damage, with power knocked out for several days in parts of La Vale. Some areas went over a week without power - in a heat wave. This was the most severe thunderstorm to hit Allegany Co. since the F4 Frostburg Tornado and hail storm on June 2, 1998 and the April 9, 1991 derecho that uprooted countless trees, blew off the entire roof of the Bon-Ton and knocked power out for 2 days. That storm also hit us around 9pm. 30: Another hot, humid day with lots of sunshine. A tough day to stay cool for all who lost power. Records (or near-records): 1: An EF-1 tornado touched down near Bellegrove, in the vicinity of Green Ridge State Forest. This was the 5th confirumed tornado in Allegany Co. in the past 4 years. 20: Min of 68 ties 2009 for the warmest. 21: Min of 69 is 1 degree shy of the 1995 record high min 70. 22: Min of 71 breaks the 1988 record 69 for the warmest. 28: High of 96 is 1 degree shy of the 1969 record 97. 29: High of 101 F shatters the 1952 record of 96 and is just 1 degree shy of the all-time record high for June of 102, set on June 2, 1951 - some 61 years ago. The AM min of 81 would have shattered an all-time June record 77 set on June 28, 2010 and the 1959 daily record high min of 73, but this reading was erased before midnight, due to rain from the derecho event. Although only .65" was measured here, another station in La Vale reported 1.37", which would have broken the daily record of 1.24" in 1972. 1.47" of rain was recorded by Greg Latta, the Co-op observer for Frostburg. MONTHLY SUMMARY June 2012 had a violent start and finish, with a lot of nothing in the middle. On the afternoon and evening of the 1st, a dozen (12) tornadoes touched down in the state of MD, its most tornadic day since July 27, 1994 when 14 twisters hit the state. An EF-1 twister touched down near Bellegrove in eastern Allegany Co, in the same vicinity of the two EF-0 tornadoes that touched down early on April 28, 2011. Additional tornadoes hit nearby Bedford and Westmoreland counties in PA. However, the derecho (with a record breaking heat wave) on the 29th was the most widespread severe thunderstorm event since April 9, 1991, when a similar derecho with 80 mph winds hit the Cumberland area and 11 tornadoes occurred in southern PA. For Allegany County, it was the worst severe weather since the June 2, 1998 F4 Frostburg tornado. Power from this June 29 event was knocked out for many days - in some areas over a week - over a large portion of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. The long power outages created dangerous conditions for a large population, due to the extreme heat wave in the eastern US that followed the storm. The derecho developed in northern Indiana and raced ESE, battering most of OH, eastern KY, all of WV, MD, DE & DC, most of VA, northern NC, extreme southern PA & southern NJ. The widespread wind damage in this storm's path was comparable to that of Hurricane Irene last August, with many millions of $ in damage. Though there were no known major local casualties, the storm was blamed for at least 20 total deaths. In addition to the monster derecho, much of the state had its hottest day ever in June on the 29th. At this station, the high of 101 was 1 degree shy of the hottest June temperature on record, 102, set on June 2, 1951 - 61 years ago. The intense heat at the end of the month skewed the temperatures slightly above average, the 8th consecutive month with above normal temperatures, although the majority of the month had near-normal temperatures. Mins were slightly above normal with maxes slightly below. Nearly all of the month between the two historic severe weather outbreaks was very quiet with a virtual lack of thunderstorms or heavy rain. Precipitation was well below normal in June for the 3rd consecutive year, with 2.53" (1.07" below the average of 3.60"), putting the 2012 precipitation deficit at 4.12".
