The 7am obs temperature at Cumberland was 79. 30: Cooler with a much more comfortable low of 56 and a high of 76, breaking a long streak of 14 consecutive days in the 80s or 90s. MONTHLY SUMMARY June was a hot, humid and dry month. It was the warmest June on record with a mean temperature of 73.7 F, breaking 1994's seemingly unbeatable record of 73.3 F. The exceptionally warm mean min of 64.3 F shatters 2005's mean min record of 61.1 F, and was 7.5 degrees F above normal. This was the 4th consecutive month in the top 4 warmest in the min temperature department. June's record warmth followed a record warm spring, continuing a major temperature reversal from a very cold and record snowy winter season, with officially ended with 78.3 inches, 3rd snowiest cold/snow season ever. June was very quiet, with a lack of signficant thunderstorms or rainfall events in the area. In fact, it ranked 5th driest June on record with only 1.38" of rainfall. Everything seemed to split and go north and/or south or dissipate when they crossed the Allegheny Front. Much heavier rains fell in the mountains to our west. On the other hand, some areas to our east had record dryness with less than an inch of rainfall. Lawns became quite parched and the ground became very hard with drought conditions developing. A meager .05" of rain fell during the final two weeks of June, along with 5 days in the 90s and all but 6 days (24 total) in the 80s or higher - all very unusual. ADDITIONAL NOTES/RECORDS: 1: Low 67 F just misses record high min of 68 in 1989. 3: Low 67 F breaks the record of 63 set on 5 previous occasions, most recently in 2006 & 2007. 4: Low 66 F breaks a 50-year old record high min of 64 in 1960. 5: Low 70 F breaks the record of 65 in 1986. 12: Low 70 F breaks the record of 68 in 2002. 13: Low 72 F breaks the record of 68 in 2005. 16: Low 68 F ties another record high min, previous reading of 68 was in 1991. 23: Low 69 F edges another record high min of 68 in 1998. 24: Low 68 F this time just misses another record high min of 69 in 1998. 28: Low 77 F shatters yet another record high min of 70 in 1999 and also sets a NEW ALL-TIME MONTHLY RECORD for the month of June. The previous record was 75 on June 26, 1948. June was the HOTTEST EVER on record with a mean temperature of 73.7 F, breaking 1994's record of 73.3 F. While the mean max temperature (83.1) was moderately above normal, 1994 still holds the record of 86.9 F. However, this month's mean min of 64.3 and its standardized anomaly (standard deviations with respect to normal) of +2.814 smashes every record out there. It was also the 3rd warmest month ever (standardized anomaly of +2.344). June is the 4th consecutive month to rank in the top 4 for warmest min temperature. 8 daily records were set. Fittingly, the warmest min temperature for June was set this month, 77 on the 28th, tying July 15, 1995 for the 2nd warmest min temperature ever. The warmest was 78 on Aug. 23, 1968. June was also the 5th driest on record (since 1948) with 1.38" of precipitation.
