Strong thunderstorm built up overhead @ 6pm with gusty winds and a deluge of rain measuring .83" in 30 minutes. Fog by late evening. 2: Early fog becoming mostly sunny by 10am. Sudden severe thunderstorms blew up in the area this evening dropping a quick .21" rain but passing mostly east of this station where damaging winds and hail were reported. 3: Cloudy all day and cooler with little to no wind. Drizzle began during the afternoon with periods of light rain during the late afternoon and evening hours .23" fell. 4: Partly sunny and breezy, warmer. A few brief afternoon showers. 5: Mostly cloudy and breezy with occasional brief showers. 6: Mostly sunny with light west winds. 7: Sunny and warm with calm wind. 8: Mostly sunny, hazy hot and humid with light breezes. Severe line of thunderstorms blew up just north & east between 5:30 and 6:30pm with wind gusts to 30 mph but only .01" rain. 9: Sunny, slightly cooler and much less humid, windy all day. 10: Sunny and calm with a few afternoon clouds and light breezes. 11: Sunny with light breezes developing in afternoon. SEVERE STORMS - FUNNEL CLOUDS! 12: Mostly cloudy, warm & humid. A rare round of late evening thunderstorms hammers the area between 8-11pm and even rarer they were moving from the NE. High winds gusting over 40 mph, severe almost continuous lightning and brief heavy rains .43" fell. Severe wind damage and several funnel clouds were reported in the Flintstone area and other parts of the county reported hail and lightning strikes that downed trees and power lines onto roads. A nearby observer in Keyser, WV reported a staggering 1,035 lightning strikes during the storms. SEVERE STORMS - ROUND 2 13: Early fog then becoming partly cloudy and humid. Another severe storm this evening moved in from the NE between 6-7:30pm bringing heavy rain, hail and gusty winds. The Cumberland area was really hammered with numerous reports of downed trees and power outages as well as golfball-sized hail and flash flooding. 0.72" rain fell. Much heavier amounts fell nearby. 14: Cloudy and much cooler with fog, drizzle and mist all day high only 65 F. 15: Mostly cloudy and cool with some partial clearing in the afternoon. 16: Partly cloudy, warmer, calm wind. 17: Partly cloudy, very warm, no wind. 18: Mostly sunny, hot and humid. Severe thunderstorms blew up just N & E of this station around 7pm. No measurable rain here but Cumberland reported heavy rain, hail and damaging winds. 19: Mostly cloudy, hot & humid. Thunder from more strong to severe storms to the east around 3pm but no rain at this station. Thundershower between 9:30 and 10pm dropped .29" rain. 20: Partly cloudy and a bit cooler and less humid with light to moderate breezes. 21: Partly cloudy and breezy. Thunderstorms between 7-8pm dropped .24" rain and wind gusts 20 to 30 mph. 22: Sunny and pleasant with light breezes. 23: Sunny with pleasant temperature and humidity, light winds. 24: Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms in the area around 3pm but only a trace of rain. 25: Mostly cloudy. Thunder observed again but once again no measurable rain. 26: Mostly cloudy, very warm and more humid. Brief localized thundershower dropped a quick .12" rain around 1pm. 27: Mostly sunny, hot and humid high 92 F. Storms passing to north but no rain or thunder. 28: Partly cloudy and calm, becoming cloudy with occasional showers this evening .21" fell. 29: Cloudy and calm with occasional light showers. 30: Partly cloudy with light breezes developing during the afternoon. MONTHLY SUMMARY June was highlighted by warm temperatures and scattered strong to severe thunderstorms. Strong to severe storms hit the area on the 1st-2nd. On the evening of the 12th, a line of severe storms brought funnel clouds to Flintstone and widespread wind damage. The following evening another severe storm hammered Cumberland with golfball-sized hail, damaging wind and flooding. Cumberland was hit by more severe storms on the 18th-19th. Those particular storms missed this station. Meanwhile, temperatures were near to above normal all month with few extremes.
