DAYS WITH FOG 15 THUNDER 9 HAIL 1 DAMAGING WINDS 1 1: A mild afternoon thunderstorm (.07") 5-6: Mild, brief afternoon thunderstorms both days. 10: Thunder from strong storms to the north late this evening. 11: Strong thunderstorm moved SE from PA and brushed this station at 1am, passing mostly to the north & east but still dropping a quick .25" of rain and dropping some wicked close lightning bolts. 13: Hot and humid high 93 F heat indeces around 100. 14: Very hot and oppressively humid, high 97, heat indeces near 110. 15: Extremely hot and humid. Low temperature of 77 F this morning set a new record high min for the month of July. Temperature reached a sizzling 100 this afternoon - not a record, actually, but this was still the hottest day on record with a mean temperature of 88.5 F. Heat indeces were over 110. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms began forming over the area during the evening hours, producing brief heavy rains, high wind gusts that brought down tree limbs and pea-sized hail. Also very frequent and intense lightning, which continued for hours as the storms continued dumping heavy rain, severe lightning and damaging winds to our east. What a day!!! 16: Very warm and muggy again overnight with a low of 75 F. 17: Hot and humid, high 90 and low 70. A brief morning thunderstorm then an intense thunderstorm around 5pm with very heavy downpours and nearly continuous cloud-to-ground lightning. A daily record of 1.19" of rain fell with some flash flooding in the Cumberland area and also some lightning damage. 24-31: 8 consecutive days in the 90s. On the 27th, a small-aircraft pilot reported 3 funnel clouds from a rotating thunderstorm about 15 miles east of Cumberland. MONTHLY SUMMARY: July was very hot and humid, with near record temperatures. It was to date the 5th hottest July on record. Highs reached 100 for the first time since 1991. The second two-thirds of the month were unbearably hot, with 14 of the final 19 days 90 or higher. Meanwhile, precipitation was below normal, with most of it falling from strong to severe storms around the middle of the month. The 15th was the hottest day on record with a mean temperature of 88.5 F, a high of 100 and a record high low of 77. Thunderstorms hit hard on the 15th and 17th, especially to our east. Another severe storm to our east on the 27th produced several funnel clouds. There was a sharp east/west precipitation gradient, with areas such as Frostburg very dry with only 1.5" of rainfall, but Cumberland reporting almost 4 inches, and some very high amounts just to the east. Additional notes/records 14: High 97 F but shy of record 102 in 1954. 15: High 100 F still not a record as 102 F was recorded in 1954. However the record high min of 77 F set a new daily high minimum temperature for the month of July. The mean of 88.5 made this the hottest day on record. 16: Record high min 75 F 17: Record high min 70 F. Record 1.19" of daily rainfall. July 1995 was the 5th hottest July on record with a mean temperature of 76.0 F.
