The mean max was only 70.1 F. 13 days failed to climb out of the 60s, with one day even in the upper 50s. Only one day topped 80. This coolness is almost unheard of for July. Overnight lows tended slightly cool but without any particuly cool readings. In contrast, July 2005 had a mean max temperature of nearly 80 with a monthly mean of 72.0 F, 19 days 80 or higher and no highs below 74. And that was not even a record hot (though close) month. The precipitation pattern was much like June, with many hit-or-miss thunderstorms and even a couple of steady rain events missing us. A lot of systems seemed to split as they approached. Also a lot of heavy rain and storms repeatedly passed just to our north or west. We finally received some welcome soaking rains, totaling 1.80", in the final 3 days of July. Still, precipitation was subnormal, for the 5th out of 7th month in 2009. Locally, there was no severe weather, but an EF2 tornado hit the Pocono Mountains near Stroudsburg PA, and an EF1 twister hit Oldtown MD, 15 miles southeast of my old hometown of LaVale. These separate severe events occurred within an hour of each other on the 29th.
