Another 7.3" of snow fell for a storm total of 11.3 inches. 5: Cloudy with a mid-day snow squall dumping 1.5" in a half-hour. 6: More light snow overnight. 7: Rain, fog, and some freezing rain during the late afternoon and evening. 12: Wet snow overnight, mixing with rain at times. A few rain showers during the day with .78" of precip and 3.5" of snow. 14: An arctic front pushed through with snow flurries, high winds, very cold wind chills below zero and temperature tumbling to a chilly 1 F by midnight. 15-16: Bitter cold with wind chills approaching -30. Highs of only 12 and 13 and lows -4 and -5. All were record lows except -5 on the 16th just missed the record of -6 in 1972. 17: Not as bitter cold but heavy snow fell all day. A few ice pellets mixed in during the mid-afternoon. A total of 12" of snow and 1.22" of precip set a new daily record. 18: Another even more intense arctic invasion, as temperatures fall all day to a frigid -11 by midnight. 19: Extreme cold low of -16 ties all-time record low set on Jan. 21, 1985. A high of only 2 also set a new all-time daily low max. This was offically the coldest day on record with a mean temperature of -7! 20: Very cold again with a low of -8 and a high of only 14. 21: Extremely cold again this morning low -13 but missing the record of -16 set in 1985. 25: A period of rain this afternoon .31" fell. 26: Light rain overnight another .12" rainfall. 27: Cold with occasional sleet developing during the afternoon and evening. 28: Sleet and freezing rain overnight with heavy icing. Storm total precip .93" with 1.5" of ice. Brief heavy rain shower late afternoon and a warming trend with a high reaching 44 F. MONTHLY SUMMARY January 1994 was a month for the record books! It was the 3rd coldest, 2nd snowiest and 4th wettest January on records. Many daily low records were set this month, particularly during one of the greatest Arctic outbreaks in recent history from the 14th-21st. 6 of 7 days were below zero, with three double- digit readings below zero, and an all-time record low -16 tied on the 19th along with the lowest max ever at only 2 F. Overall 8 daily record lows were set, with several more merely missed. Meanwhile, the area was assaulted by several nasty winter storms. 11.3" of snow fell from a Nor' Easter on the 3rd-4th, a mild ice storm hit the area on the 7th, heavy wet snow fell on the 12th, a daily record 12 inches (1 foot) of snow fell on the 17th, and another ice storm crushed the area on the 27th-28th with 1.5" of sleet/freezing rain. A total of 30.3" of snow fell, the most snow to fall in a month since January 1978, which was the snowiest month to date with 39.5" of snowfall. 5.20" of melted precipitation also made it the 4th "wettest" January on record. The mean temperature of 23.4 F was 3rd coldest. Winter definitely hammered the area this month!
