MONTHLY SUMMARY January 2011 was cold and dry. Temperatures were moderately below normal, and substantially below normal with respect to max temperatures. 20 days failed to climb above freezing. This weather pattern followed suit of December, which had 18 sub-freezing high temperatures. While there were not many extremes, a brief Arctic invasion dropped the temperature to 2 F on the 24th. The monthly high of 44 tied January 2003 for the lowest extreme max for any month. The obvious highlight of the month was the fast-moving Nor-Easter that raced through the Mid- Atlantic on the 26th. Widespread snows of 6-12" fell in the area, in a short period of time. The storm reeked havoc on the major metro areas to our east (DC, Baltimore, Philly) as the heaviest snows hit there in the middle of rush hour, causing hundreds of accidents. Many areas had thunder-snow or thunder-sleet. The storm continued northeast, with upwards of 2 feet in areas near New York City and southern New England. Other than this storm, snow fell in several small increments. Despite the low precipitation total, snow was above normal, as nearly all of the month's precipitation fell as snow. This was the 1st time in 7 years (since 2004) with above normal January snowfall. The month ended with sleet on the evening of the 31st. Additional Notes/Records: 26th: Daily record snowfall 7.0"
