MONTHLY SUMMARY February was one of the coldest months in years and one of the coldest on record. It was a very wintry month dominated by cold, wind, snow and ice. The first 19 days were generally frigid, with near-record subzero temperatures on the 5th and 6th and wind chills near -40 F. Temperatures finally moderated somewhat from the 20th on. All min temps were below freezing and 23 of 28 days had max temps below freezing. More than half the days (16) had lows in the single digits or lower. Needless to say, temperatures were well below normal. Meanwhile, precipitation and snowfall were slightly above normal. It is surprising that not a little more snow fell, given the amount of precipitation and how cold it was. Several systems dropped substantially heavier snow to our south. The most significant winter storm occurred on the 13th-14th with 1.34" precipitation, 10" snow and about an inch of sleet and freezing rain. Heavy snow squalls, thundersnow and damaging winds were observed on the 22nd. Another moderate ice storm on the 25th-26th completed an active, wintry weather month.
