Many trees and power lines were blown over this morning, and a communications tower atop Dan's Rock was even toppled. Winds were estimated at 70 mph in some areas! 13: Cold low 15 F with increasing clouds and sleet/freezing rain beginning mid- evening. 0.5" of ice by midnight. 14: Heavy ice storm overnight. Another 0.8" of sleet and glaze. 1.3" total ice melted down to .99" of precip. 16: Occasional showers, dense fog, brief evening thunderstorm .35" of rain fell. 18-31: An unusually long 14-day (2-week stretch) of lows in the teens or single digits. 19: Steady light snows through the day, ending late, 2.5" fell. 23: Cold low 6 F 25: Cold, blustery, low 8 F high only 18. 26-31: Continued cold and blustery. Summary: December was quite cold with two consecutive weeks of unsually cold lows in the teens and single figures to finish off the month. All but one of those days failed to climb above freezing. There was a fury of wild weather at mid-month, with a huge wind storm on the 12th, a heavy ice storm on the 13th-14th, a thunderstorm on the 16th and a snow storm on the 19th that stayed through Christmas. Additional notes/records 5th: Record low 12 F December 2000 was the 4th coldest December on record with a mean temperature of 25.2 F. The average high of 32.5 F was 3rd coldest on record.
