A round of early afternoon heavy rain with imbedded thunderstorms brought cooler temperature and a much-needed .59" of rainfall. 8: Early PM thunderstorm dropped a quick .25" of rain. 13: Very hot and humid high 96 F. Very heavy thunderstorms passed north of the area this evening. 17: Very hot and humid again high 95 F. 20: Hot and humid. Strong thunderstorms developed just east of the area, only .01" of rain here. 24: Strong afternoon thunderstorm between 3-4pm. Gusty winds, heavy downpours, frequent intense lightning, .82" of rain fell. 25: Rain began this morning and became heavy around midday. Showers, heavy at times, continued through the late afternoon hours. 1.49" of rain fell, 2.31" since yesterday afternoon. This rain was very much needed after a very hot, dry stretch beginning way back in May. 26: A few showers 27: A couple of showers with thunder, one at midday and the other around 3pm. The storms dropped an inch of rain in Cumberland but only .22" here. 29-31: Much cooler overnight lows of 46, 46 and 44. Summary: August began where July left off, that is, hot. However we did not see as much of the extreme heat as in July. It was a dry month but precipitation finished near normal thanks to some welcome rains late in the month. Both temperatures and precipitation were slightly above normal. Additional notes/records 13th: Record high 96 F. 25th: Record daily rainfall 1.49" fell.
