A quick look at Johnstown records since 1931 indicates that this was probably the wettest August on record. A whopping 10.48" of rain fell. The August record for the old Johnstown station, just a few miles east of this one, was 10.14" in 1975. This was probably the wettest month since the big flood of July 1977, when an amazing 14.01" fell. The only other month coming close was November 1985 with 10.24 inches. Unlike 1977, no major flooding occurred, as the rainfall was more evenly spread out through the month and didn't come all at once. Strong to severe storms hit the area on several occasions, most notably on the 9th, when a couple of spectacular storms hammered us with heavy rain, strong wind, vicious lightning, flash flooding and power outages. 2.65" fell from those storms. The other major rain event was from the 19th-21st, when 4.10" fell in the 3-day period from a nearly stationary front. Aside from a brief cool-down just after mid-month, temperatures were generally near to above average, especially overnight lows, which never reached below the mid 50s. It is fairly unusual to not have at least one or two nights in the 40s, especially in late August. Though there was no extreme heat, there were several very warm days, which felt even warmer due to high humidity. August was by far the warmest month of 2007, with a mean temperature of 69.4 F, nearly 3 degrees warmer than July.
