Strong thunderstorms built up all around this station in every direction 3-6pm with the heaviest just to the NW and SE. Radar estimated 2-3 inches of rain in some parts of the county. Thunder but only a trace of rain. 8: Cloudy with light rain through early afternoon. Only .18" fell as areas to the north & south were again getting hammered by strong storms and very heavy rain. Cooler high only 72 F. 9: Some light rain (.09") overnight and fog on mountaintops. Continued cool. 10: Became mostly sunny and warmer again with calm wind. 11: Mostly sunny, warm, hazy, humid, breezy. 12: Early mountaintop fog then sunny, hot and humid. 13: Early light fog then sunny, hot and humid. 14: Sunny, hot and humid, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with light SW winds. 15: Partly cloudy and not quite as warm or humid. 16: Shower before 7am then more showers 9am-noon .27" fell with low clouds. Partial PM clearing. 17: Heavy AM fog then sunny and warm with low humidity. 18: Light AM haze, becoming mostly sunny then partly cloudy during the afternoon. 19: Cloudy and cooler with a couple periods of light drizzle around dawn and noon. 20: Cloudy with mountain fog becoming clear by 9pm. Hot and humid high 92 F. Some light rain 11pm-midnight and distant lightning as a big line of storms fell apart. Only .03" fell. 21: Partly cloudy and warm with light S winds. 22: Cooler overnight low 57 F. Clear becoming partly cloudy and pleasant. 23: Cool AM low 55 F then partly cloudy and pleasant. 24: Cloudy becoming partly sunny and pleasant. 25: Clear early becoming cloudy during the day. 26: Cloudy with a shower about 6pm .07" fell. 27: Steady light rain began early this morning and continued through the day with low clouds and mountain fog. Cool high only 64 F. Total .51" rain fell. 28: Early fog then partly cloudy and much warmer but with lower humidity. 29: Cloudy and cooler with light rain beginning about 5pm and continuing on and off through midnight .10" fell. 30: Fog and light drizzle through the day with slowly rising temperatures. Rain showers 8pm- midnight .25" fell by then. 31: A few more showers overnight and early morning. Remained cloudy with the threat of rain but only drizzle during the day. SUMMARY: August 2005 was a quiet month with a very warm first half and milder second half. Precipitation was well below normal and this August surpassed last year as the second driest August in 14 years of records. Thunder was observed on only one day, which is a record low for August. Additional notes/records 9: Record low max 71 F 27: Record low max 64 F August 2005 followed suit of July and ranked 3rd warmest for a mean min temperature of 64.5 F. The summer of 2005 had the warmest mean min temperature ever on record of 63.6 F. August was the 5th driest on record with 1.67" of rainfall.
