Line of storms about 4:30pm did the usual split with just a bit of thunder and 20 mph winds gusts and only .02" rain. 5: Threatening skies early but no rain. Partly cloudy and much cooler high 77 F. 6: Cool low 53 F and high struggled to 70 F. Partly cloudy skies. 9: Hot again high 94 F. Partly cloudy becoming sunny in the afternoon. 10: Partly cloudy AM, sunny PM. Some thunder this evening around 8pm but no measurable rain. 12: Cloudy all day with drizzle & light rain beginning around 9am. Heavy rain 11am-2pm then lighter rains through the evening tapering. Total .79" rain fell. Also cool high only 67 F. 14: Light AM fog, then sunny becoming partly cloudy. Cool low 54 F and high 74 F. 16: Light early AM rain from about 4-7am .15" fell. Became mostly sunny during most of the day. 19: Shower overnight and again this morning with moderate rains .14" fell. 20: Clear and calm. Big storms this afternoon and evening 4-7pm broke up and went all around this station in every direction. Areas just to the south & east were hammered with 2+ inches of rain. 21: Rain during the early to mid morning hours .28" fell. Became breezy & cooler today. 27: Clear and calm overnight. Increasing clouds with a brief thundershower 2:20pm only .02" rain. 28: Early morning fog. Sunny AM, increasing clouds with thunder by 2pm as storms blew up just east of this station but no measurable rain. Partly cloudy the rest of the day. Big storms again this evening 8-10pm narrowly passing W & N of this station. Lots of lightning and thunder but not a drop of rain. Lots of flooding to N in Bedford County PA. 29: Light AM fog then mostly clear. Became mostly cloudy during the afternoon. Good thunderstorms 3-4:30pm with some heavy downpours at times. More storms 7-8pm with brief heavy rains but most of the storms were to the N and W. A total of .60" rain fell. Areas just to the W and SW were hit hard with 2-3 inches in some areas. Lots of flash flooding reported in the SW portion of the county. 30: Light AM fog then cloudy. Partly cloudy PM with light & variable winds. Forecast called for heavy rain but not a drop fell. 31: Light AM fog again. Cloudy AM but clear by noon. Sunny, breezy & pleasant afternoon. SUMMARY: Following a very wet July, precipitation was below normal in August and it was the 2nd driest August on record. This was in spite of three tropical systems that soaked the Mid-Atlantic and thunderstorms that hammered surrounding areas with flooding rains on numerous occasions. Temperatures were near normal, with a mix of hot and cool weather. Fog was common during the later half of the month. Additional notes/records 12: Record low max 67 F 30: Record high min 70 F
