Severe thunderstorms built up just to the NE and inched east of the area with central parts of the county getting hammered with ping-pong ball sized hail and extremely heavy rain. Thunder was observed at this station for nearly 3 hours 4-7pm. 3rd: Severe thunderstorms built up about 1pm, skirted just north & east of this station with a lot of severe lightning and 20 mph wind gusts but not a drop of rain. Storms built up again 2:45-3:30pm with a lot of lightning and .27" rain, more storms to the N & W through 5pm. Damaging wind and hail was reported in Cumberland. Mineral Co., WV really got pounded with damaging wind, large hail and extremely heavy rain. 5th: Thunderstorms to the north & east again 12-2:30pm. Storms slowly inched south into the area between 3-4:15pm. Heavy downpours & frequent lightning, .75" fell by 4:15pm. More showers and storms through 9:30pm for a total of 1.08". The central part of the county was hit hard once again with extremely heavy rain and damaging winds, and over 3" of rain caused flash flooding just north of the area in Bedford Co., PA. 6th: A much cooler, less humid, sunny beautiful day with light breezes. **Nate leaves for Salt Lake City on the 12th** All observations beyond this point are taken by Steve & Sara Mullins or by David Drewery. 13th: Thunderstorm late this evening 10-11pm just to the east. No rain fell here but wind damage was reported just north & east of Cumberland. 14th: Some morning fog in the higher elevations. Very warm and humid high of 89F. 16th: Light rain and sprinkles on and off all day, .05" fell. INTENSE STORM 18th: Another hot humid day. Powerful thunderstorm moved through this evening 7-8:30pm with wind gusts to 35 mph, intense almost continuous lightning some directly overhead and heavy downpours totaling 0.99" of rain. 19th: Some early light showers .02" fell. 22nd: A hot and more humid day, some light showers late this evening from dissipating t-storms. MORE STORMS 23rd: Another hot humid day. Thunderstorms late this evening 10pm-midnight with some heavy downpours at times .65" rain fell. 24th: Brief thunderstorm overnight and more showers on and off through the morning .23" fell. 28th: Light rain and drizzle on and off during the evening hours as a major storm went up the east coast, we were right on the western fringe of the system with only .10" rain falling. AUGUST SUMMARY August yielded warm temperatures and near-average precipitation. Temperatures were relatively consistent, although the heat was on at times, especially during the first few days when temperatures reached well into the 90s. During this time there were several strong to severe storms that hit the county. Strong storms were also noted on the 13th, 18th and 23rd-24th. Temperatures finally began to cool down by month's end.
