Big thunderstorms blew up to the W/NW of this station this afternoon and took a slow SE track. One of the storms clipped this station dropping a quick .64" of rain in 20 minutes late this afternoon. 1.58" was recorded in Frostburg, and 3+ inches of rain fell near Lonaconing, resulting in flash flooding just SW of the area. 4: A couple of strong thunderstorms moved in from the ENE this afternoon dropping a combined .56" of rainfall. Some very close/intense lightning. Locally some 1+" rain amounts were observed. 8-9: Hot and humid highs 92 and 93 F. 10: Thunderstorms in the area early this evening but mostly broke up and only dropped .05" rain. 12: Heavy thunderstorms at midday dropped .58" of rain. 1.40" was reported in Cumberland with some flash flooding in the Bowling Green - Cumberland areas. 16: Late evening showers dropped .29" rain. 19: Mild thunderstorms (.11" rain) 23: Overnight rain showers .36" fell. 26: Brief PM t-storm .16" of rain 31: Afternoon showers with imbedded thunder .18" of rainfall. Summary: August brought frequent showers and thunderstorms. This pattern began in mid-May and led to above normal summer precipitation, although August was slightly drier than normal. Many days had rain but no particularly high amounts, despite some nearby flooding on the 3rd-4th and again on the 12th. Temperatures returned to above normal, and August was the warmest month of 2001 with a mean temp. of 73.2 F. Temperatures were consistently in the 80s+, and the min temperature positive anomaly accounted almost entirely for the above normal temps. Additional notes/records 8th: Record high min 71 F, later broken with 74 in 2007. 12th: Record high min 70 F - record still stands
